Outreach Programs
Sonia Kovalevsky Day at Washington University in Saint Louis
Sonia Kovalevsky Day is a nationwide outreach program (organized by the Association for Women in Mathematics) typically designed for middle and/or high school girls to encourage these young women to consider continuing to study mathematics at the college level and to consider mathematical careers. This event is named in honor of Russian mathematician, Sonia Kovalevsky, who, in the 19th century, became the first woman to earn a doctorate in mathematics.
In Spring 2024, Saint Louis University faculty member Dr. Dorsa Ghoreishi, along with Washington University in St. Louis faculty member Dr. Martha Precup and myself, organized the first annual Sonia Kovalevsky Day event at Washington University in Saint Louis.
